abbey kids volunteer information

Thank you for signing up to work with the kids at the Abbey!

We are very grateful for your willingness to extend hospitality to our little ones.

Here are some things to guide you on this venture:

  • First, if you have not yet filled out information for a background check, please do so right away using the button below which will download a fillable form. This is standard practice for working with kids and helps protect everyone. We’re working on finishing up our child-protection policies and we’ll get those into your hands as soon as possible.

  • The Abbey Kids Schedule (a guide for your time with the kids) is at the bottom of this page. Please read this through before the Sunday you are scheduled to serve. You may deviate from this as the needs of the group demand, however, keeping a predictable rhythm for the children week to week is important. There is also a Schedule posted up in the childcare room for reference.

  • There is a clear snack box labeled Abbey Kids Snacks in the childcare room. If it is close to empty please let Nicole Taylor know via Slack. And/or bring a gluten-free snack to help keep the bin full.

  • Please pick up the childcare room before leaving for the night. Make sure everything is put back in its home and that the floor is relatively free of crumbs and broken crayons.

  • If you have any questions or concerns feel free to reach out to Nicole Taylor via Slack anytime.

  • Have fun and be yourself! We are so grateful for you!

Abbey Kids Sunday Schedule

Ages 4-8

3:50-4:15 Welcome and Play - Put out coloring or play dough to invite them in while people arrive. Ask the children how they are, what they did this week, and help them feel welcomed and settled. Model meaningful engagement (fellowship) and invite them to share with each other.

4:15-4:20 One-Two Minute Silence/Guided Meditation - Ask the kids to sit somewhere comfortably and explain that you are going to have quiet time as a group for a very short time. Ask them to close their eyes and think about their breaths.

4:20-4:30 Scripture Reading/Lectio - Pick a short passage out of one of the gospels. (Children’s bibles provided). Read it slowly once and ask them to imagine themselves as one of the people the story (“What would it be like to be ______?”). Allow them to share their thoughts. Read it slowly through again if there is time and ask them to imagine themselves as a different person in the story. Allow them to share. Ask open-ended questions.

(4:30ish Worship in Sanctuary) - On Worship Sundays, when you hear the music, take the children to the sanctuary and allow them to sit with their parents. When worship is over, walk the children back to the room for Snack and Play.

4:30-4:45 Prayer - After Scripture Reading/Lectio, ask the children if there is anything they would like prayer for and pray with them and allow them to pray for each other.

4:45-5:30 Snack and Play - Snacks are provided. They are in a clear bin labeled Abbey Kids Snacks. If the weather is nice, head outside to the church’s yard for play. If it is not, do something that you find fun with the kids (a craft, game, etc.).
